Two summers ago my life changed forever. I was a newlywed (still am, send gifts) madly in love with my wife (still am, she is a gift from God) and living in a cozy house just up the street from the local Dairy Queen.
It was during this summer that we began taking family walks. Sometimes we would walk around the neighborhood, sometimes it was down the street that included a stop in Dairy Queen. Being the sort of fellow I am, I decided to determine which blizzard flavor was objectively the best they had to offer.
That was the first year that I heard of the S’mores Blizzard. If it preexisted the summer of 2014, I was unaware of it. And I will never be the same again. After looking at the Dairy Queen website, here is the base recipe for this taste of bliss:
Mini marshmallow filled chocolate bars, toasted graham topping, graham cracker pieces and marshmallow topping blended with creamy DQ® vanilla soft serve.
After several visits, I put my own spin on this treat to send the awesomeness of it into the stratosphere. I asked them to use chocolate ice cream as the base instead of vanilla and then to hold the chocolate bars for the sake of texture. Eventually I asked them to SUBSTITUTE a double dose of the toasted graham topping for the chocolate bars, hoping to avoid the surcharge of an additional ingredient. This is the recipe of greatness!
I saw just this week that the S’mores Blizzard is making a comeback in 2016, and that it is bringing a variation that utilizes OREO cookies. You can color me “cautiously intrigued.” Here are the official ingredients of this version:
OREO® cookies, mini marshmallow filled chocolate bars, graham cracker pieces and marshmallow topping blended with creamy DQ® vanilla soft serve.
I’m on the fence here. I have already achieved Nirvanic bliss with the extra toasted graham topping, which is interestingly enough omitted from the OREO version of this treat. But if I don’t at least try the OREO blizzard, can I honestly proclaim my go-to flavor to be unbeatable? My integrity is on the line here!
