Hard work is not the opposite of grace, it is the result of experiencing grace

Philippians 2:12-13
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. 

I used to err on the side of this verse that my sanctification was God's job and not mine. After all, it was Him working in me, right? So if I was participating instead of being carried along it was works-righteousness, right?

Wrong. In Christ, we are empowered to participate in our sanctification. And it is not for us to neglect that holy calling. You will not drift toward holiness. Instead, obey the Holy Spirit and dive into the word of God. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly and be a conduit of grace to a dry and weary land where there is no water. 

And do all of this in the power of God, who is working in you to accomplish all that you were meant to do and to be.
